The black and white cake is a staple when I come to visit family in Michigan. Hands down, this is the absolutely best cake I have ever eaten. The vanilla layer on top and chocolate on the bottom with a very light buttercream icing is beyond delicious. I wish I could find a bakery close to home that could even come close. I look forward to my visits, and hope this place can stay open and not drowned out by the large multi-department stores. I cannot attest to the customer service, but my relatives have never mentioned having a bad experience there....and believe me.....they would tell if they did!!! A 9" double layer birthday cake was $20.....but worth every cent!

Rude rude rude rude. My fiancé walked in asked a few questions they were rude and asked her to leave. I would say more but such unprofessional rude people will not get it. Costco and SAMs has better products then this establishment.

This place is only getting 1 star because the food is of good quality. Otherwise they would get NO STARS. The customer service is HORRIBLE. The 2 ladies who "HELPED" me were rude, uninformative, and totally NOT HELPFUL. I basically said thank you, walked out, and took my business ELSEWHERE..... to the Bake Station in Southfield (Closer to my house anyway). They acted like I was bothering them with my questions and requests. I will not go back here ever which is very unforunate. I grew up in the area and this is the first place I thought of to purchase a birthday cake in which I needed customized rather quickly. This place is one of the many staples of SCS and I am all for supporting locally owned businesses. I also had emailed them twice (they state on their website that you can email them for a quote) and I never heard back. So I went in there only to be treated badly. I was pressed for time and aggravated by the rudeness so I left abruptly and purchased a cake across town in moments notice, exactly what I wanted, and CHEAPER too. Thanks, Hodells for your non-help. Take heed: get some better help in your store to treat your customers as they should be treated considering those are the people keeping your business alive. I've posted a picture to show that what I was requesting could be done!!

This place is so great! I needed some cookies delivered to my nephew's birthday party, and this was not easy to arrange from California! But this place made it happen! Highly recommend this wonderfully accommodating bakery!

I have never been in your bakery but my daughter got her wedding cake there 20 years ago. I got married last sept and she got my wedding cake there. We only get our cakes from Hodells they get a 5 Star. I will be in soon to get a birthday cake !! Mlbarclay

Well Dennis O, no more Napoleons. Thats why 3 stars instead of five. I stopped by to pick some up and was rudely told "HE DOESN'T MAKE EM ANYMORE.". I wanted to b*#@h slap her, and were now down to 2 stars. Real nice customer service.. I shouldn't have but I bought some eclairs and the eclairs if rated by themselves would be 5+stars god were they good.

I first had a piece of Hodell's cake when a co-worker brought in a piece of cake from her son's birthday. It was one of the best pieces of cake I had ever eaten; a moist, light yellow cake with a raspberry filling and a delicious buttercream frosting. I went to Hodell's shortly thereafter and was instantly impressed by how spotlessly clean the place was; gleaming cases, shiny floors, even the back room was spotless. The variety of cakes and pastries was the second thing that impressed me; all kinds of cookies, several different types of cakes (many which were unique such as a banana cake with chocolate frosting), various pastries, breads, muffins, jelly rolls, and some interesting confections like a pineapple cream square... not to mention a selection of cakes beautifully decorated ready to be personalized for any occasion. The reasonable prices were the third thing that impressed me; fair prices for delicious baked goods. I ordered a "sleeping beauty" which is like an individual sized piece of Sander's bumpy cake. I also picked up a yellow cake with buttercream frosting (moist, fresh cake with a delicious frosting) and some cookies which were all delicious and homemade tasting. The staff was friendly and greeted many of the other customers who walked in by name. I returned a few weeks later for a birthday cake which everyone raved about. I then ordered a specialty cake for Cinco de Mayo. I wanted something specific written on it (it was a little off-color) and they accommodated me with no problem. My friend loved her cake and we've been talking about it since. I would recommend Hodell's to anyone looking for a good bakery with delicious products and a helpful staff. I live in Macomb Township and will travel to St. Clair Shores to patronize this place, it's that good.

If you're looking for a bakery on the east side your search ends here. Friendly staff, tasty treats, and family owned for like 50 years. (It used to be at Harper and Cadieux and it was called Hodell's Cake Box back in the day) Best Napoleons in the region, hands down. They have this single-serve cake type thing called a Sleeping Beauty that is sinfully delicious. It's basically a miniature bumpy cake. Check it out, you won't be disappointed!

This is a wonderful bakery! We stopped in to pick up our Fat Tuesday treat and was extremely pleased. They were fresh and tasted like the true Hamtramack treat. 2-1-2010 - We Have Been Back To This Place Several Times Since We First Yelped About It and It Just Keeps Getting Better & Better Every time!!!
